Rules and Expectations

  • Please be on time for class.
  • Use the washroom before class.
  • Wear a bodysuit and tights, or shorts and tank top and knee socks.
  • Wear highland slippers (ghillies).  No bare feet.
  • New beginners can wear gymnastic/ballet slippers.
  • Wear hair tied back in a ponytail or bun.
  • Bring a water bottle.
  • Bring practice skirt for national dances.
  • Dancers do not need to bring swords, as I have practice swords they can use.
  • No food or chewing of gum.
  • Practice at home as often as possible.
  • As long as students are registered with the Worthen School of Highland Dance, they are not permitted to take lessons from another teacher. However, workshops are recommended.
  • Competitive dancers should attend classes twice a week.
  • Occasionally, I will be judging competitions in the Maritimes. My students are not allowed to attend these competitions. This is a rule set by the RSOBHD (Royal Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing). Whenever and wherever I judge, I will inform my students ahead of time.
  • In case of inclement weather, dancers will be notified by 2:00pm to confirm cancellation.
  • From time to time, dancers may be invited to perform at various events. Any money earned from performing will go directly into our fundraising account, but most performances are volunteer based.
  • There will be an end of the year recital in May.
  • Parents/guardians are encouraged to join the WSHD private Facebook page.
  • Please do not post anything unrelated to highland dancing on our Facebook page.
  • Most importantly...HAVE FUN!
